Our
rabbits have had several different living arrangements over the past
few years, including an outdoor hutch, individual cages on a work
bench, stacking cages and now the rabbit barn. We decided to construct
a new barn when we found that our 2-car garage was a bit small for 40
rabbits, 2 cars, 9 bikes, and everything else a garage is expected to
contain.
The barn is about 20' X 24' and is build with redwood lattice and wire mesh so that there is plenty of airflow but the structure is secure from intruders such as raccoons. Since we live in the San Francisco Bay area, the winter temperatures are mild enough that we do not worry about frozen water lines or excessively cold conditions in the barn. We have a vent and exhaust fan that is set to come on when the temperature is above 80 degrees.
The
cages in the barn were purchased from Bass Equipment and use Flush
Clean trays. The trays are cleaned using a hose to flush the excreta
to the center trough which is then rinsed to the end of the trays and
scooped up for composting or flushed down a garbage disposal. We use
ZapsIt on the trays to eliminate odor. We have an automatic watering
system with PVC pipes to each cage and feeders hanging on the outside
of the cages.
